Vitamin D dramatically cuts cancer risk: study (CTV.ca)
This story quotes research from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that finds that a combination of vitamin D3 and calcium has a substantially marked effect on reducing cancer incidence.
In women there was a reduction of 60% in cancer infections!
The most revealing part of the study was the level of Vitamin D assigned to the subjects of the study. Traditional recommendations have been for 200 IU per day. The Canadian Cancer Society is recommending 1,000 IU per day for adults (no recommendation is given for children).
The Osteoporosis Society of Canada currently recommends that adults get 1,000 mg of calcium per day, and that increases to 1,500 if you are over the age of 50.
Dr. Reinhold Vieth, who has conducted numerous studies of vitamin D at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital, believes every Canadian could benefit from taking a vitamin D supplement. "The vitamin D story is what I call a 'no-lose' proposition. Take it. You can only win,"
